I CAN

Empowering Sudanese teachers/mentors to nurture youth wellbeing, agency, social action and global citizenship through an intercultural exchange with peers from South Africa and Serbia.

VIRTUAL YOUTH EXCHANGE
The I CAN Virtual Youth Exchange will empower 30 Sudanese youth (13 - 18 years) to nurture their wellbeing, agency, social action and global citizenship through an intercultural exchange with peers from South Africa and Serbia. This is a free, fully funded programme supported by Erasmus+ European Commission. Youth who join will reconnect with friends from Sudan, connect with new Sudanese friends sharing similar experiences and have a space to address issues affecting their wellbeing through wellbeing micro-breaks and by leading social action projects using the FIDS (Feel-Imagine-Do-Share) framework. In each series of 16 online mentorship calls, 8 large groups calls are co-facilitated by DFC Sudan/South Africa Founder Juanita Rea and 8 small groups calls are facilitated by a Sudanese, Arabic speaking teacher.
Participant Criteria For Funded Spaces and Registration Process
We have Agila Omer, Tanya Abdalla and Lorraine Sabbagh, Mohammed Osman and Juanita Rea all former teachers at Khartoum International Community School who will be online mentors for youth who sign up individually and form groups.
We want to support youth who have been displaced from Khartoum and elsewhere in Sudan and now living in another country
This could be a way for youth to reconnect with friends! So even though youth are now in different countries, they could be coming together with former classmates/schoolmates to connect and collaborate on the weekly online calls that run from February to June. For this route, we need youth or parents to let us know if they will be asking friends to join or joining because a friend asked them to join, and tell us their names too.
It could also be a way for youth to meet new people and connect with other youth with similar lived experiences. I have heard from Sarah Babiker, our DFC Sudan Student Council Member for 2024 that many of the youth feel isolated at their new schools because most peers have little understanding and no experience of what youth have lived through having to flee from Sudan and not being able to go back home because of the ongoing war. If youth are joining us on their own, we will put them into a group with other Sudanese youth and over the course of the programme, we hope that they feel that they have made some new friends.
If youth sign up by themselves, they must ensure that their parent/s fill up the parent consent section for registration to be finalised.
